This service is for an orthoroentgenogram, also known as a 3-foot film, involving two or more views. As a diagnostic radiology service, payment is divided into a technical component (`X031H) and a professional component (X031P`). The professional component covers the interpretation and report, while the technical component covers the equipment, supplies, and personnel for performing the X-ray. Per , the technical component is not payable if rendered to a hospital in-patient or an out-patient admitted within 24 hours for the same condition, and is not payable if rendered outside of a hospital.
When to Use
- Use X031 for long-bone alignment studies, such as leg length discrepancy assessments, requiring a 3-foot film with two or more views.
- Select X031 instead of standard X-ray codes like X033 when the clinical requirement is specifically a full-length orthoroentgenogram for orthopedic planning.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing the technical component (X031H) for hospital in-patients or out-patients admitted within 24 hours, which is strictly prohibited under GP11.
- Attempting to bill the technical component (X031H) for services rendered in a private clinic or non-hospital setting, as this component is only payable for hospital-based services.
