When to Use
- Use Z108 specifically for general anaesthesia provided during the incision and drainage or haematoma evacuation of palmar or plantar space infections.
- Select Z108 when the surgical procedure is localized to the deep fascial spaces of the hand or foot, as opposed to superficial integumentary procedures.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing Z108 when the operating surgeon also administers the anaesthetic; the anaesthetic fee is not payable to the surgeon performing the primary procedure.
- Failing to document the specific start and end times of the anaesthesia service, which are required to calculate the total time units in addition to the basic units for Z108.
- Incorrectly applying Z108 for local infiltration or regional blocks; Z108 is strictly for general anaesthesia as defined in the General Preamble.
