Z173
Z173 – Abscess or haematoma - Local anaesthetic - subcutaneous - two
OHIP Psychiatric Code — INTEGUMENTARY SYSTEM SURGICAL PROCEDURES · Schedule of Benefits
Incision of an abscess or haematoma under local anaesthetic, specifically for two subcutaneous lesions. This is a surgical procedure.
When to Use
- Use Z173 when performing an incision and drainage of two distinct subcutaneous abscesses or haematomas during the same encounter under local anaesthetic.
- Use this code when the clinical documentation clearly specifies two separate anatomical sites, distinguishing it from Z101 (single lesion) or Z174 (three or more lesions).
Common Pitfalls
- Billing Z173 in addition to a minor assessment code (A007) is generally disallowed as the assessment is considered bundled into the surgical procedure fee.
- Attempting to bill Z173 alongside Z101 for the same patient encounter will result in a rejection for duplicate or overlapping services.
- Failure to append the E542 premium when the procedure is performed in a clinic or office setting outside of a hospital facility results in underpayment.
Billing Tips
- Always ensure your operative note explicitly documents the location and nature of both lesions to support the use of the 'two' designation code.
- If performing the procedure after hours or on weekends, remember to apply the appropriate E409 or E410 premiums to the Z173 base fee to maximize claim value.
