Z290 – Hip - infant or child, under general anaesthesia
OHIP Psychiatric Code — MUSCULOSKELETAL SYSTEM SURGICAL PROCEDURES · Schedule of Benefits
Aspiration or injection procedure of the hip joint in an infant or child. This service must be performed under general anaesthesia as defined in the Schedule of Benefits (). It is a surgical procedure and is eligible for both assistant and anaesthetist fees based on time units plus 6 base units each (, ).
When to Use
- Use Z290 specifically for aspiration or injection of the hip joint in patients aged 29 days up to 15 years when performed under general anaesthesia.
- Do not use Z290 for office-based procedures performed under local anaesthetic; those should be billed under appropriate diagnostic/therapeutic injection codes.
Common Pitfalls
- Failure to document start and end times for the procedure, which is mandatory for claiming the associated anaesthetist and surgical assistant time units.
- Attempting to bill a separate hospital admission assessment on the same day as the procedure, which is disallowed under the surgical preamble unless it qualifies as the major pre-operative visit.
Billing Tips
- Ensure you apply the correct age-based premium (e.g., AGE_PREMIUM_LT_2Y or AGE_PREMIUM_LT_5Y) to the Z290 base fee, as these are not automatically calculated by the system.
- When billing for the anaesthesiologist, remember to add the age-specific unit modifiers E009C or E019C to the anaesthetic time units to maximize the claim.
