Z335 – Thoracoscopy (pleuroscopy)
OHIP Psychiatric Code — RESPIRATORY SURGICAL PROCEDURES · Schedule of Benefits
Thoracoscopy, also known as pleuroscopy, is an endoscopic procedure for the examination of the pleural space. This service includes any associated procedures such as pleural biopsy or suction performed during the same session. As an Independent Operative Procedure (IOP), specific rules apply regarding pre-operative assessments (see ).
When to Use
- Use Z335 for diagnostic thoracoscopy when the primary intent is visual examination of the pleural space, regardless of whether a biopsy is taken.
- Use this code for therapeutic pleuroscopy involving suction or drainage of pleural fluid, as these components are included in the fee.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing a separate biopsy code is a common error; Z335 is an all-inclusive procedure that already covers pleural biopsies performed during the same session.
- Attempting to bill a consultation or major assessment on the same day as Z335 will trigger a rejection because it is an Independent Operative Procedure (IOP).
- Failing to document the specific need for an assistant when billing M400B will result in automatic denial, as assistance is not automatically listed for this code.
Billing Tips
- If you perform multiple procedures during the same hospitalization for the same condition, ensure Z335 is billed at 100% if it is the major procedure, with subsequent procedures billed at 85%.
