A direct laryngoscopy with dilatation of the larynx, which includes bronchoscopy if necessary. As a 'Z' code, this service is defined as an Independent Operative Procedure (IOP) and is subject to the corresponding billing rules outlined in the Surgical Preamble.
When to Use
- Use Z343 when performing direct laryngoscopy specifically for the purpose of dilating a laryngeal stenosis or stricture.
- Use Z343 when the procedure includes a diagnostic bronchoscopy as a component of the laryngeal assessment and treatment.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing Z343 alongside other laryngeal procedures without applying the 85% multiple procedure rule for the secondary service.
- Attempting to bill a separate diagnostic bronchoscopy code when it is performed during the same session, as it is considered included in Z343.
Billing Tips
- Always append E600 if an operating microscope is utilized, provided you are not also billing E643.
