When to Use
- Use Z510 for the formal surgical drainage of a peritonsillar, retropharyngeal, or parapharyngeal abscess.
- Use this code for the evacuation of a pharyngeal haematoma following trauma or post-operative bleeding when the procedure requires surgical intervention beyond simple bedside aspiration.
Common Pitfalls
- Do not bill Z510 for simple needle aspiration of an abscess; this is considered part of a consultation or visit, not a surgical drainage procedure.
- Avoid billing Z510 in conjunction with tonsillectomy codes (e.g., S100) if the drainage is performed as an incidental part of the primary procedure, as this is considered inclusive.
