Z529Dilation of oesophagus - initial session

OHIP Psychiatric Code — DIGESTIVE SYSTEM SURGICAL PROCEDURES · Schedule of Benefits

This service is for the initial session of passive (bougie) dilation of the oesophagus. This code should be used for the first procedure in a series of treatments. Any subsequent repeat dilation performed within three months of a previous dilation must be claimed using Z530. As a surgical procedure, it may be eligible for various add-on premiums, such as those for age, after-hours service, or trauma.

When to Use

  • Use Z529 for the first session of a new course of passive (bougie) oesophageal dilation.
  • Use Z529 when the patient has not received a dilation procedure within the preceding three-month window.

Common Pitfalls

  • Billing Z529 for a repeat dilation that occurs within three months of the previous session, which must be claimed as Z530.
  • Failing to apply the appropriate age-based premium (e.g., for patients under 16) which is a significant missed revenue opportunity for this surgical code.

Billing Tips

  • Always verify the date of the patient's last dilation in the billing history to ensure the three-month threshold for Z530 has passed before using Z529.
  • Ensure that if the procedure is performed after hours or for trauma, you append the correct premium code (E409, E410, or E420) to maximize the procedural fee.
