Z539
Z539 – Dilation of gastrostomy, enterostomy, colostomy, etc.
OHIP Psychiatric Code — DIGESTIVE SYSTEM SURGICAL PROCEDURES · Schedule of Benefits
Dilation of gastrostomy, enterostomy, colostomy, etc. This is a manipulation procedure. The fee for this service includes the common and specific elements for surgical services as defined in the Schedule of Benefits.
When to Use
- Use Z539 when performing a manual or instrumental dilation of a stenotic gastrostomy or colostomy stoma to restore patency.
- Select Z539 for routine maintenance dilation of a mature stoma that has become tight, provided no formal surgical revision is required.
Common Pitfalls
- Do not bill Z539 in conjunction with a consultation or assessment code (A007, A003) on the same day, as the procedure fee is considered inclusive of the visit.
- Avoid billing Z539 if the procedure is part of a more complex surgical revision or reconstruction, which would be covered under a different surgical code series.
Billing Tips
- Ensure the clinical note explicitly describes the dilation technique used, as Z539 is strictly a manipulation procedure and requires evidence of the physical intervention.
