Z550
Z550 – Dilation of anal sphincter
OHIP Psychiatric Code — DIGESTIVE SYSTEM SURGICAL PROCEDURES · Schedule of Benefits
A surgical manipulation procedure for the dilation of the anal sphincter.
When to Use
- Use Z550 when performing a manual or instrumental dilation of the anal sphincter as a standalone therapeutic procedure.
- Select Z550 for patients requiring anal sphincter dilation for chronic fissure management when no other surgical procedure is performed during the same encounter.
Common Pitfalls
- Do not bill Z550 if a more comprehensive procedure like a hemorrhoidectomy (S248) is performed, as the dilation is considered incidental to the primary surgery.
- Avoid billing Z550 alongside other anorectal procedures unless the dilation is distinct and medically necessary beyond the scope of the primary surgery.
Billing Tips
- Ensure the procedure is performed in a setting eligible for surgical premiums, such as an operating room or designated procedure room, to maximize claim value.
- If the patient is placed in the prone position for the procedure, remember to append the E011C premium to the claim if an anaesthesiologist is present.
