Z552 – Peritoneoscopy, culdoscopy or laparoscopy - without biopsy

Performs a diagnostic peritoneoscopy, culdoscopy, or laparoscopy. This service does not include biopsy, lysis of adhesions, removal of a foreign body, or cautery of endometrial implants. For a procedure that includes these additional components, see Z553.
When to Use
- Use Z552 for a purely diagnostic laparoscopy where the abdomen is inspected but no therapeutic intervention, biopsy, or tissue manipulation occurs.
- Use Z552 for a diagnostic culdoscopy performed to visualize the pelvic cavity when no further surgical action is taken.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing Z552 when any additional procedure, such as a biopsy, lysis of adhesions, or cautery, is performed; these require Z553 instead.
- Attempting to bill Z552 alongside other surgical procedures performed during the same operative session, which may trigger a 'multiple procedure' audit or rejection if not correctly appended with the appropriate reduction rules.
Billing Tips
- Ensure your operative report explicitly states that no biopsy or therapeutic intervention was performed to justify the use of Z552 over the higher-valued Z553.
- If a second assistant is required for this procedure, you must obtain prior authorization from the Ministry, as Z552 is not on the pre-approved list for second assistant coverage.
