When to Use
- Use Z709 for the incision and drainage of a scrotal abscess performed under local anaesthetic in an office or clinic setting.
- Use Z709 for the evacuation of a scrotal haematocele when the procedure is limited to incision and drainage under local anaesthetic.
Common Pitfalls
- Do not bill Z709 in conjunction with a minor assessment code (e.g., A007) on the same day, as the assessment is considered included in the surgical fee.
- Avoid using Z709 if the procedure requires general or regional anaesthesia; in those cases, the procedure is typically billed under different surgical codes (e.g., S616) which account for the increased complexity.
- Do not bill Z709 if the procedure is performed as part of a more extensive scrotal exploration or repair, as it will be considered bundled into the primary procedure.
