Z714 – Abscess of vulva, Bartholin or Skene’s gland - incision and drainage

A surgical procedure involving the incision and drainage of an abscess located on the vulva, Bartholin's gland, or Skene's gland. This procedure is specified for use with local anaesthetic. It includes all common and specific elements of a surgical procedure as defined in the Schedule of Benefits (see -14). An add-on premium (E542) is applicable when this service is performed outside a hospital.
When to Use
- Use Z714 for the incision and drainage of a symptomatic Bartholin gland abscess performed under local anaesthetic in an office or clinic setting.
- Use Z714 for the management of a Skene's gland abscess or a localized vulvar abscess when the procedure is limited to incision and drainage.
Common Pitfalls
- Do not bill Z714 in conjunction with a general assessment or consultation code unless a separate, unrelated clinical issue is addressed and documented.
- Avoid billing Z714 if the procedure is performed under general anaesthetic or sedation, as this code is specifically designated for local anaesthetic procedures; use appropriate hospital-based surgical codes instead.
- Failure to append the E542 premium when performing the procedure in an office setting results in an automatic underpayment of the service.
