Z721
Z721 – Pharmacological suppression of premature labour by I.V. therapy
OHIP Psychiatric Code — OBSTETRICS · Schedule of Benefits
Pharmacological suppression of premature labour by I.V. therapy to be claimed once per physician after 3 hours of supervision in same institution.
When to Use
- Use Z721 when actively managing a high-risk pregnancy with intravenous tocolytics (e.g., magnesium sulfate or nifedipine) for a minimum of three hours.
- Use this code for the initial stabilization period of preterm labour suppression in an inpatient or observation setting.
Common Pitfalls
- Claiming Z721 without explicitly documenting the start and end times of the IV therapy, which is a mandatory requirement under GP7.
- Attempting to bill Z721 for oral tocolytic management, as the code specifically requires intravenous therapy.
- Billing Z721 in addition to a general assessment code for the same time period if the assessment is considered part of the procedural supervision.
Billing Tips
- Ensure the medical record clearly identifies the high-risk nature of the pregnancy, as this is a specific requirement for the validity of the claim.
- If the tocolytic therapy extends into after-hours periods, ensure you append the appropriate premium (E409 or E410) to the Z721 fee to maximize the claim value.
