When to Use
- Use Z802 for the therapeutic aspiration of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) via an existing burr hole or fontanelle to manage intracranial pressure.
- Use Z802 for diagnostic ventricular puncture when accessing the ventricular system through a previously established surgical opening.
- Use Z802 for the aspiration of the cisterna magna, provided the procedure is performed as a distinct surgical intervention.
Common Pitfalls
- Do not bill Z802 if the ventricular puncture is performed as part of a more extensive neurosurgical procedure, as it is considered an integral component of the primary surgery.
- Avoid billing Z802 for routine lumbar punctures; Z802 is strictly limited to ventricular or cisternal access via the specified routes.
