Z804Lumbar puncture

OHIP Psychiatric Code — DIAGNOSTIC AND THERAPEUTIC PROCEDURES · Schedule of Benefits

Lumbar puncture is a procedure to collect cerebrospinal fluid. This service is inclusive of the following components which are not separately billable: - Injection of any medication or other therapeutic agent introduced at time of lumbar puncture. - Image guidance, if performed.

When to Use

  • Use Z804 when performing a diagnostic lumbar puncture to collect cerebrospinal fluid for analysis, regardless of whether image guidance is utilized.
  • Use Z804 for therapeutic lumbar punctures intended to reduce intracranial pressure, as the code encompasses the procedure regardless of the clinical indication.

Common Pitfalls

  • Do not bill for image guidance separately, as the fee for Z804 explicitly includes any imaging performed during the procedure.
  • Avoid billing for the injection of intrathecal medications alongside Z804, as the administration of therapeutic agents is considered inclusive of the procedure fee.
  • Do not attempt to bill Z804 in combination with epidural nerve block codes or C-suffix anaesthesia services, as these are restricted under the Schedule of Benefits.

Billing Tips

  • Ensure you append the appropriate Special Visit Premium if the lumbar puncture is performed in an emergency or hospital setting outside of your regular scheduled hours.
