A surgical procedure involving the removal of a tissue sample from the ear canal for examination. This service is for a biopsy performed without general anaesthesia. For the same procedure performed under general anaesthetic, see Z846.
When to Use
- Use Z909 when performing a diagnostic tissue biopsy of the external auditory canal in an office or clinic setting without general anesthesia.
- Select Z909 for the removal of a suspicious lesion or growth within the ear canal where the primary intent is pathological examination.
Common Pitfalls
- Do not bill Z909 concurrently with ear debridement codes if the debridement was performed solely to gain access to the biopsy site.
- Avoid using Z909 if the procedure is performed under general anesthesia, as Z846 is the mandatory alternative for those cases.
- Billing Z909 for routine cerumen removal or simple cleaning is an audit risk; ensure the clinical record explicitly supports the collection of a tissue specimen.
Billing Tips
- If the biopsy is performed as part of an emergency department visit by an eligible physician during the 00:00h to 07:00h window, apply the E413 premium to increase the fee by 40%.
