Z944 – Lumbar sub-arachnoid drainage of CSF
OHIP Psychiatric Code — SPINAL SURGICAL PROCEDURES · Schedule of Benefits
This fee code represents payment for the surgical procedure involving the drainage of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) from the lumbar sub-arachnoid space. This is a surgical service and as such, includes all common elements as defined in the Schedule of Benefits (, ).
When to Use
- Use Z944 for the therapeutic drainage of CSF via a lumbar puncture or catheter in patients with communicating hydrocephalus or pseudotumor cerebri.
- Use Z944 when performing a lumbar sub-arachnoid drain placement specifically for the management of CSF leaks or to monitor intracranial pressure in a surgical context.
Common Pitfalls
- Do not bill Z944 in addition to a diagnostic lumbar puncture (Z355); the procedure is considered inclusive of the access and drainage.
- Avoid billing Z944 for simple diagnostic sampling; it is strictly intended for therapeutic drainage procedures.
- Failure to document the specific clinical indication for the drainage can lead to audit rejections, as this code is often scrutinized for medical necessity.
Billing Tips
- Since Z944 does not have assigned assistant or anaesthesia units, you must use M400B for assistant authorization and standard time-based anaesthesia units if applicable.
- Ensure that if this procedure is performed in an emergency setting, you apply the appropriate E409 or E410 premium, as these are compatible with Z944.
