Every physician billing OHIP is registered under a two-digit specialty code, and that number does more work than most people expect. It decides which codes you are eligible to claim at all — a large share of the Schedule of Benefits is restricted to specific specialties — and, for some codes, it decides how much the same service pays. Two physicians can perform the same consultation and be paid different amounts because their specialty designations differ.

This matters most at the boundaries. Consultation codes, specific assessments, and chronic disease management codes are commonly specialty-restricted, so a code that a colleague bills routinely may reject outright for you. The reverse is just as costly: codes reserved for your specialty that you never learned about, because they don't appear in the general listings everyone starts from.
