A limited service constituting a history of the presenting complaint, the necessary physical examination, advice to the patient, and an appropriate record. Often used for the management of complex psoriasis or complex dermatitis.
When to Use
- Use A024 for follow-up visits for patients with complex psoriasis or dermatitis once the 6-visit limit for A020 has been reached.
- Bill A024 when a patient presents with complex dermatitis (e.g., >30% Body Surface Area involvement) and requires a history, examination, advice, and record, but does not meet the criteria for a full A020 assessment.
- A024 is appropriate for managing patients on systemic therapy for psoriasis who require ongoing monitoring and management, provided it's not a full A020 assessment.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing A024 when the patient's condition meets the criteria for a full A020 assessment (e.g., new onset, significant change in severity, or initiation of new systemic therapy) can lead to claim rejection or adjustment.
- Using A024 for routine follow-ups of simple eczema or psoriasis that do not involve systemic therapy or extensive BSA involvement may be considered an inappropriate use of the code.
- Billing A024 for visits that do not involve at least 15 minutes of direct patient contact or meet other complexity criteria can lead to audit issues.
