A radiology second opinion of an MRI study is the service rendered when MRI images made and interpreted by a radiologist at one institution or facility are referred to a radiologist at a different institution or facility for his/her written interpretation.
When to Use
- Bill A332 when a radiologist at your facility provides a written interpretation of MRI images that were originally interpreted by a radiologist at a different institution.
- Use A332 for a second opinion on an MRI study of a specific anatomical region, such as the head or spine, when images originate from an external source.
- A332 is appropriate when a referring physician requests a second opinion on an MRI study performed at another facility, requiring a distinct written report from your radiologist.
Common Pitfalls
- Submitting A332 for a second opinion of a CT study; use A330 instead.
- Billing A332 when the MRI images were acquired at your own institution, even if a different radiologist is providing the second interpretation.
- Failing to include a written request from the referring physician and the consultant radiologist's written report in your documentation, which is required for A332.
Billing Tips
- Ensure the MRI study is from a different institution than where the second opinion is being provided to justify A332.
- A332 is limited to one per patient per study per 30-day period; avoid duplicate billings within this timeframe for the same MRI study.
