A510Complex neuromuscular assessment

OHIP General Listings Code — CONSULTATIONS AND VISITS · Schedule of Benefits

An assessment for the ongoing management of specific diseases of the neuromuscular system where the complexity of the condition requires the continuing management by a physical medicine and rehabilitation specialist. Eligible conditions include generalized peripheral neuropathies, myopathies, diseases of the neuromuscular junction, or diseases of the motor neurone.

When to Use

  • Bill A510 for a patient with a confirmed diagnosis of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) requiring ongoing management of their progressive motor neuron disease.
  • Use A510 when managing a patient with Myasthenia Gravis who presents with worsening symptoms and requires a reassessment of their treatment plan.
  • A510 is appropriate for the continued management of a patient with a generalized peripheral neuropathy, such as Guillain-Barré syndrome, where complex adjustments to care are needed.

Common Pitfalls

  • Billing A510 for routine follow-ups of conditions like carpal tunnel syndrome or Bell's palsy, which are explicitly excluded and may be billed with simpler assessment codes like A007.
  • Submitting A510 without a clear medical-specific re-assessment documented, leading to payment adjustment to a lesser assessment fee, potentially C311 if applicable.
  • Billing A510 on the same day as E078 (Emergency Department visit), as these codes are mutually exclusive and will result in rejection of one or both claims.

Billing Tips

  • Ensure the patient's condition clearly falls under generalized peripheral neuropathies, myopathies, diseases of the neuromuscular junction, or diseases of the motor neurone to justify the complexity of A510.
  • When billing A510, confirm that the documentation details a medical-specific re-assessment, differentiating it from a standard follow-up visit.

Assessment

A complex neuromuscular assessment must include the elements of a medical specific re-assessment, or the amount payable will be adjusted to lesser assessment fee.

The physician must be managing one of the following: generalized peripheral neuropathies, myopathies, diseases of the neuromuscular junction, or diseases of the motor neurone.

A consultation or assessment service, as appropriate, may be claimed for the initial evaluation of a patient.

A510 is specifically for ongoing management by a Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation specialist.
