A815 – Midwife or Aboriginal Midwife-Requested Special Assessment (MAMRSA)

A Midwife or Aboriginal Midwife-Requested Special Assessment (MAMRSA) is an assessment of a mother or newborn provided by a physician upon the written request of a midwife or Aboriginal midwife because of the complex, obscure, or serious nature of the patient’s problem. It must include the constituent elements of A813 (MAMRA) and is payable in any setting.
Must be requested in writing by a midwife or Aboriginal midwife (urgent/emergency requests may be initiated verbally but must be followed in writing).
The written request must be retained in the patient's permanent medical record.
Must include the common and specific elements of a general or specific assessment ().
For family physicians or obstetricians: The physician must spend a minimum of 50 minutes in direct contact with the patient.
The 50 minutes must be exclusive of time spent rendering any other separately billable intervention to the patient.
The start and stop times of the assessment must be recorded on the patient’s permanent medical record.
The physician must submit findings, opinions, and recommendations: (1) verbally to the midwife, (2) in writing to the midwife, and (3) in writing to the patient's primary care physician or nurse practitioner (if applicable).
Usage limits
Maximum one per patient per physician per pregnancy.
