A house call assessment - Pronouncement of death in the home is the service rendered when a physician pronounces a patient dead in a home. This service includes completion of the death certificate and counselling of any relatives which may be rendered during the same visit.
When to Use
- Bill A902 when you attend a patient's private residence to pronounce them deceased and complete the death certificate.
- Use A902 for a house call to pronounce death, even if the patient was recently seen for a chronic illness.
- A902 is appropriate for a pronouncement of death at home following a sudden, unexpected event.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing A902 for a pronouncement of death in a nursing home or other facility; use A777/C777 instead.
- Submitting A902 if the patient was pronounced deceased in a hospital setting; this code is strictly for home visits.
- Failing to include the correct diagnostic code for the underlying cause of death on the claim, as per submission instructions.
Billing Tips
- A902 is eligible for Special Visit Premiums (e.g., B960-B964, B990-B996) if the visit meets the criteria outlined in the General Preamble.
- Ensure the diagnostic code submitted reflects the underlying cause of death, not just the immediate cause, for accurate record-keeping and billing.
