A933 – On-call admission assessment
OHIP General Listings Code — CONSULTATIONS AND VISITS · Schedule of Benefits
On-call admission assessment is the first hospital in-patient admission general assessment per patient per 30-day period rendered by a general practitioner or family physician who participates in the hospital’s on-call roster. The physician must be the most responsible physician (MRP) for the patient's subsequent in-patient care, and the admission must be non-elective.
When to Use
- Bill A933 when you are the on-call physician and admit a patient non-electively from the ED, and you will be the MRP for their subsequent inpatient care.
- Use A933 for the initial inpatient general assessment when admitting a patient from the ED, provided it's the first such assessment within 30 days and you are the MRP.
- A933 is appropriate for a non-elective admission assessment performed by the on-call physician who is designated as the MRP for the patient's inpatient stay.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing A933 when the patient was admitted electively, as this code is only for non-elective admissions.
- Claiming A933 for a second inpatient admission assessment within 30 days for the same patient by the same physician; this should be billed as A004.
- Submitting A933 when a prior ED assessment (e.g., A100) by the same physician is considered the admission assessment, making A933 not separately payable.
Billing Tips
- Ensure the patient's admission is non-elective and you are the Most Responsible Physician (MRP) to justify billing A933.
- A933 is not eligible for virtual care; it requires a direct patient encounter for the admission assessment.

Assessment
The admission must be non-elective.
The service must be the first hospital in-patient admission general assessment per patient per 30-day period to be eligible for the full fee.
If the physician renders an assessment other than a consultation, general assessment, or general re-assessment in the ED/OPD and then admits the patient, A933 is eligible for payment in addition to the initial assessment if each is rendered separately.
A933 is not eligible for virtual care (video or telephone) as it is not listed in Appendix J.
