C989 – Obstetrical Delivery with Sacrifice of Office Hours
OHIP Surgical Procedures Code — GENERAL PREAMBLE · Schedule of Benefits
This premium is payable in addition to the fee for the first obstetrical delivery in a calendar day when the physician makes a previously unscheduled non-elective visit for the delivery during weekday hours (07:00-24:00), which causes a delay or cancellation of a scheduled office visit. For a special visit to be payable, it must be initiated by a patient or an individual on behalf of the patient. See General Preamble for the full definition of a special visit and for the special visit premium table.
When to Use
- Use C989 when you are called in from your office to the hospital for a delivery during weekday hours (07:00-24:00), forcing you to cancel or delay existing scheduled office appointments.
- Apply this code when the delivery is non-elective and the request for your attendance is initiated by the patient or hospital staff, meeting the criteria for a 'Special Visit' under GP65.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing C989 for a delivery that occurs during your pre-scheduled hospital rounds or elective induction time, which violates the 'sacrifice of office hours' requirement.
- Submitting C989 alongside a routine office visit fee for the same patient on the same day, as this premium is strictly for unscheduled, non-elective hospital attendance.
Billing Tips
- Ensure you document the exact time of the call and the time of arrival at the hospital, as this is mandatory to justify the 'sacrifice' of your office schedule during an audit.
