D007 – Closed reduction of carpal dislocation
OHIP Orthopaedic Surgery Code — MUSCULOSKELETAL SYSTEM SURGICAL PROCEDURES · Schedule of Benefits
Closed reduction for a dislocation of a carpal bone. This procedure does not involve a surgical incision. It is eligible for anaesthesia services. An additional fee for applying a plaster cast outside of a hospital (E584) may be applicable.
When to Use
- Use D007 when performing a manual closed reduction for a carpal bone dislocation, such as a lunate or perilunate dislocation, without surgical incision.
- Select D007 instead of D008 when the procedure is limited to a closed reduction rather than an open reduction requiring surgical exposure.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing D007 in conjunction with an open reduction code (D008) for the same site is considered unbundling and will result in rejection.
- Failing to document the specific carpal bone involved can lead to audit scrutiny regarding the necessity of the procedure compared to a simple wrist reduction.
Billing Tips
- If you apply a plaster cast in an office setting following the reduction, ensure you bill E584 separately to capture the supply and application fee.
- Always append the appropriate after-hours premium if the reduction is performed outside of standard business hours, as D007 is eligible for these surcharges.
