An open reduction is a surgical procedure to repair a bone or joint, in this case, a carpal dislocation, where an incision is made to access and realign the bones. This procedure requires an assistant and anaesthesia as per the listed units in the Schedule of Benefits. The Schedule lists 6 basic units for an assistant and 7 basic units for anaesthesia for this procedure. See .
When to Use
- Use D008 when performing an open reduction for a carpal dislocation that requires a formal incision to access and realign the joint.
- Use D008 for complex carpal dislocations where closed reduction (D007) has failed or is deemed inappropriate due to the nature of the injury.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing D008 when only a closed reduction was performed; closed reductions must be billed under D007.
- Attempting to bill for a second surgical assistant without prior authorization from a medical consultant, as D008 is not on the pre-approved list for multiple assistants.
- Failing to document the specific carpal bones involved, which is necessary to justify the open approach over a closed reduction.
Billing Tips
