E012 – Malignant hyperthermia premium

Patient who is known to have malignant hyperthermia or there is a strong suspicion of susceptibility, and the anaesthetic requires full malignant hyperthermia set up and management
When to Use
- Use E012C when performing a general anaesthetic on a patient with a documented history of Malignant Hyperthermia (MH) requiring the use of a TIVA (Total Intravenous Anaesthesia) technique to avoid triggering agents.
- Apply E012C for patients with a strong family history of MH where the anaesthetic plan mandates the removal of vaporizers and the implementation of a full MH-safe machine setup.
Common Pitfalls
- Do not bill E012C for patients who are simply anxious or have a history of post-operative nausea; it is strictly reserved for confirmed or highly suspected MH susceptibility.
- Avoid claiming E012C in combination with E010C or E011C unless the clinical documentation explicitly justifies the additional complexity of both the MH management and the BMI or positioning requirements.
Billing Tips
- Ensure the anaesthetic record clearly notes the removal of vaporizers and the use of a dedicated MH-safe circuit, as these are the primary audit markers for justifying the extra units.
- Remember that E012C adds extra units to the total unit calculation, which then serves as the base for calculating after-hours premiums like E400C or E401C.
