E014 – Newborn to 28 days (Anaesthesia Extra Units)

An amount is payable for extra units in addition to basic units when an anaesthesiologist administers an anaesthetic to a newborn from birth to 28 days of age.
When to Use
- Use E014C for any neonate aged 0-28 days undergoing general, regional, or deep sedation anaesthesia to claim the mandatory age-based unit modifier.
- Apply this code when the patient is a full-term newborn, as E021C is strictly reserved for premature infants less than 37 weeks gestational age.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing E014C alongside E030C or E031C will result in an automatic rejection, as these codes are mutually exclusive for nerve block sedation.
- Failing to include E014C in the total anaesthetic unit calculation when applying E400C or E401C premiums will result in underpayment of the after-hours percentage increase.
Billing Tips
- Always append the 'C' suffix to E014 and ensure it is submitted in the same claim as the primary anaesthesia procedure code to trigger the correct unit calculation.
