E024
E024 – Patient in sitting position during surgery, > 60 degrees upright
OHIP Surgical Assists Code · Schedule of Benefits
Extra units payable in addition to basic units when an anaesthesiologist administers an anaesthetic to a patient in a sitting position during surgery, greater than 60 degrees upright.
When to Use
- Use E024C for posterior fossa craniotomies or shoulder arthroscopies where the patient is maintained in a beach-chair or sitting position exceeding 60 degrees.
- Apply this code when the surgical requirement for a sitting position significantly increases the anaesthetic management complexity compared to a standard supine procedure.
Common Pitfalls
- Attempting to claim E024C alongside E030C or E031C will result in an automatic rejection as these nerve block sedation codes exclude all GP97 extra units.
- Failure to document the specific degree of upright positioning in the anaesthetic record creates a high risk of clawback during an audit if the 60-degree threshold is challenged.
Billing Tips
- Ensure E024C is appended to the primary anaesthesia base code (e.g., E032C for GI procedures) to ensure the extra units are correctly calculated on top of the base and time units.
