OHIP Surgical Assists Code — OCULAR SURGICAL PROCEDURES · Schedule of Benefits

A surgical procedure involving the enucleation (removal) of one or both eyes from a deceased individual (post-mortem) for the purpose of organ donation. The fee for this service covers the procedure whether one or both eyes are harvested.

When to Use

  • Use E108 when performing the surgical removal of one eye from a deceased donor for transplantation.
  • Use E108 when performing the bilateral enucleation of both eyes from a single deceased donor, as the fee covers the procedure regardless of whether one or both eyes are harvested.

Common Pitfalls

  • Attempting to bill E108 twice for a bilateral procedure; the code is inclusive of both eyes and should only be submitted once per donor.
  • Attempting to claim surgical assistance (suffix B) or anaesthesia (suffix C) with E108, which are strictly ineligible as no basic units are assigned to this code.

Billing Tips

  • Apply the appropriate age-based premium (e.g., AGE_PREMIUM_LT_16Y) if the donor meets the specific age criteria, as E108 is eligible for these increases.
  • Ensure that if the procedure is performed during after-hours periods, you append the relevant E409 or E410 premium to the E108 claim to maximize the procedural fee.
