OHIP Surgical Assists Code — OCULAR SURGICAL PROCEDURES · Schedule of Benefits
A secondary operation following an unsuccessful operation or for a fresh detachment in the same eye. This service may be rendered with or without diathermy, photocoagulation, or cryopexy, as these are considered inclusive components of the procedure as per .
When to Use
- Use for a secondary retinal detachment repair when the initial primary procedure (e.g., E151 or E152) has failed.
- Use for a fresh retinal detachment occurring in the same eye that has previously undergone a retinal detachment repair.
Common Pitfalls
- Do not bill separately for diathermy, photocoagulation, or cryopexy, as these are explicitly defined as inclusive components of E153 per GP6.
- Avoid billing E153 for a primary, initial retinal detachment repair, as this code is strictly reserved for secondary or revision procedures.
Billing Tips
- Ensure the operative report clearly documents the history of the previous unsuccessful procedure or the specific nature of the new detachment to support the revision classification.
