E152
E152 – Scleral resection or buckling procedure
OHIP Surgical Assists Code — OCULAR SURGICAL PROCEDURES · Schedule of Benefits
Scleral resection or buckling procedure - with or without diathermy, photocoagulation or cryopexy, primary or subsequent procedure
When to Use
- Use E152 for the primary repair of a rhegmatogenous retinal detachment involving the placement of an encircling element or segmental buckle.
- Apply E152 when performing a revision or secondary buckling procedure for a recurrent retinal detachment, regardless of whether additional cryopexy or photocoagulation is applied.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing E152 in conjunction with E151 (Retinal detachment repair by vitrectomy) is generally considered unbundling unless distinct, separate pathologies are addressed in different quadrants.
- Submitting E152 when the procedure is limited to simple laser retinopexy or cryopexy without the placement of a scleral buckle will trigger an audit for inappropriate code selection.
Billing Tips
- Ensure the operative report explicitly details the placement of the buckle or resection, as this is the primary requirement for E152 validation over simpler retinal procedures.
