E304Reconstruction of total ear with cartilage graft

OHIP Surgical Assists Code — Y. Ocular and Aural Surgical Procedures · Schedule of Benefits

Reconstruction of total ear with cartilage graft (e.g., Brent Technique), first stage. This service is the first stage of a complex reconstructive procedure. An assistant fee (suffix B) is calculated based on 6 basic units plus time units. An anaesthesia fee (suffix C) is calculated based on 6 basic units plus time units. Note: Per the Schedule, descriptive details of the procedure (e.g., an operative report) should be submitted with claims for professional assessment (see Surgical Preamble, paragraph 17). This note also applies to E307 and E308.

When to Use

  • Use E304 specifically for the initial stage of total ear reconstruction involving the harvest and placement of a cartilage graft, such as the Brent technique.
  • Distinguish E304 from E307 and E308 by ensuring it is only billed for the first stage of the multi-stage reconstructive process.

Common Pitfalls

  • Failure to submit the operative report at the time of billing will result in an automatic rejection or a request for manual review under Surgical Preamble paragraph 17.
  • Billing E304 for subsequent stages of the reconstruction, which should instead be coded under E307 or E308 depending on the specific procedure performed.

Billing Tips

  • Always attach the operative report electronically or via manual submission to avoid the delay of a professional assessment request.
