When to Use
- Use E306 when performing extensive surgical debridement or excision of necrotic cartilage in cases of severe perichondritis that exceed the scope of simple incision and drainage.
- Select E306 instead of E305 when the procedure involves radical removal of infected tissue rather than simple drainage of an abscess.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing for ear debridement under microscopy as a separate procedure is prohibited when it is performed solely for access to the surgical site during E306.
- Attempting to bill for a surgical assistant using suffix 'B' will result in an automatic rejection, as this code requires a manual submission of M400B with supporting documentation for independent consideration.
Billing Tips
- If a surgical assistant is medically necessary, ensure the surgeon's letter explicitly justifies the complexity to meet the requirements for the 7 basic units allowed under M400B.
