E390 – Halo fixation/traction
OHIP Surgical Assists Code — SPINAL SURGICAL PROCEDURES · Schedule of Benefits
This code represents the application of halo fixation or traction as a pre-operative or peri-operative component of major scoliosis correction surgery. It is only payable in addition to the primary surgical procedures for anterior scoliosis correction (N539) or posterior scoliosis correction (N540).
When to Use
- Use E390 when applying halo traction as a planned pre-operative stabilization measure for patients undergoing major scoliosis correction via N539 or N540.
- Use E390 for the application of halo fixation performed in the peri-operative window to facilitate the primary spinal deformity correction procedure.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing E390 as a standalone procedure will result in rejection; it must be submitted on the same claim as the primary N539 or N540 code.
- Attempting to bill E390 for halo applications unrelated to scoliosis correction surgery is an audit risk, as the code is strictly restricted to the context of N539/N540.
Billing Tips
- Ensure the age premium is applied to E390 when the patient is under 16, as it is a surgical procedure listed in the Z section of the Schedule of Benefits.
