An add-on fee payable in addition to J315 (Graded exercise to maximum tolerance) when J301 (simple spirometry) or J304 (simple spirometry and flow volume loop) is performed before and/or after the exercise test. The Schedule of Benefits lists this service with a technical component (H Fee) of $13.30 and a professional component (P Fee) of $8.05.
When to Use
- Use E450 when performing a formal exercise challenge test (J315) that requires pre- and post-exercise spirometry to assess for exercise-induced bronchoconstriction.
- Select E450 when the clinical protocol necessitates a flow volume loop (J304) specifically to document changes in airway caliber immediately following the J315 exercise tolerance test.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing J301 or J304 as standalone codes on the same day as J315 will result in a rejection; E450 is the mandatory substitute for the spirometry component in this context.
- Failing to split the claim into E450B for the technical component and E450C for the professional component will cause payment processing errors.
