E601 – Additional rib resection
OHIP Surgical Assists Code — RESPIRATORY SURGICAL PROCEDURES · Schedule of Benefits
This service provides additional compensation to the surgeon for the resection of each rib beyond the three covered by the primary procedure, M105 (Chest wall tumour, resection of 2 or 3 ribs or cartilages). It can be claimed for a maximum of three additional ribs. This service is part of a larger chest wall reconstruction and is only payable when performed with M105. The fee includes all associated pre-operative and post-operative care as outlined in the Surgical Preamble ().
When to Use
- Use E601 when performing a chest wall resection involving four, five, or six ribs in conjunction with the primary M105 procedure.
- Claim E601 for each additional rib beyond the initial three covered by M105, up to a maximum of three units.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing E601 without M105 on the same claim will result in an automatic rejection.
- Exceeding the maximum of three units of E601, as the Ministry only compensates for up to three additional ribs beyond the base M105 procedure.
- Failing to apply the 85% multiple procedure rule (SP3) to E601 if it is considered a secondary procedure performed during the same operative session.
Billing Tips
- Ensure the total number of ribs resected is clearly documented in the operative report to justify the number of E601 units claimed.
- When claiming E601 with M105, ensure the primary procedure M105 is listed first to correctly trigger the surgical payment hierarchy.
