E639
E639 – Anterior cricoid split
OHIP Surgical Assists Code — RESPIRATORY SURGICAL PROCEDURES · Schedule of Benefits
Anterior cricoid split is an add-on procedure performed in conjunction with a tracheotomy (`Z741). This fee is claimed in addition to the fee for the primary tracheotomy procedure.
When to Use
- Use E639 exclusively as an add-on procedure when performing an anterior cricoid split to manage subglottic stenosis during a tracheotomy (Z741).
- Claim this code when the cricoid split is performed to facilitate airway expansion in conjunction with the primary tracheotomy procedure.
Common Pitfalls
- Attempting to bill E639 as a standalone procedure will result in automatic rejection, as it is strictly an add-on code requiring Z741 on the same claim.
- Failing to apply the appropriate age-based surgical premium (e.g., under 1 year) to the E639 fee, as add-on codes are eligible for these percentage increases.
Billing Tips
- Ensure E639 is submitted on the same claim as Z741 to satisfy the mandatory linkage requirement for add-on procedures.
- If the procedure is performed after hours or on a weekend, apply the relevant E409 or E410 premium to both the primary Z741 and the add-on E639 to maximize the total procedural benefit.
