A tracheotomy is the surgical procedure for creating an opening into the trachea. This service is classified as an Independent Operative Procedure (IOP) and carries the 'Z' prefix. As an IOP, the fee for Z741 does not include pre- and post-operative care. Payment rules for other assessments on the same day are restrictive; refer to the Surgical Preamble for details. The fee for the surgeon (suffix A) is a flat rate. Fees for the surgical assistant (suffix B) and anaesthesiologist (suffix C) are calculated based on a unit system. Both assistant and anaesthetist services are allocated 6 base units, with additional time units calculated for the duration of the procedure.
