This is an add-on code payable in addition to a sigmoidoscopy procedure such as Z535, Z536, or Z592. It covers the endoscopic placement of a stent within the rectum. The fee for this service is added to the fee for the primary sigmoidoscopy procedure.

When to Use

Use E641 when performing a palliative rectal stent placement for malignant obstruction during a diagnostic or therapeutic sigmoidoscopy (Z535, Z536, or Z592).
Apply this code when managing a benign rectal stricture that requires endoscopic stenting as an adjunct to the primary sigmoidoscopy procedure.

Common Pitfalls

Billing E641 without a valid primary sigmoidoscopy code (Z535, Z536, or Z592) will result in an automatic rejection.
Attempting to bill E641 as a standalone service is prohibited, as it is strictly an add-on code intended to compensate for the technical component of the stent placement only.
