E880Parathyroid re-implantation

OHIP Surgical Assists Code — ENDOCRINE SURGICAL PROCEDURES · Schedule of Benefits

Parathyroid(s) re-implantation is an additional procedure that can be claimed when performed during a total thyroidectomy (S788) or completion thyroidectomy (S793).

When to Use

  • Claim E880 when you perform an autotransplantation of parathyroid tissue into the sternocleidomastoid muscle or forearm during a total thyroidectomy (S788).
  • Use this code when performing parathyroid re-implantation during a completion thyroidectomy (S793) due to inadvertent devascularization of the glands.

Common Pitfalls

  • Billing E880 as a standalone procedure; it is strictly an add-on code and must be submitted on the same claim as the primary thyroidectomy (S788 or S793).
  • Attempting to claim E880 for parathyroidectomy (S795 or S796) procedures, as it is specifically intended for re-implantation during thyroid surgery, not for excision of parathyroid adenomas.

Billing Tips

  • Ensure the primary thyroidectomy code (S788 or S793) is listed first on the claim to prevent automatic rejection of the E880 add-on.
  • If the procedure is performed after hours or on a weekend, apply the appropriate premium (E409 or E410) to the total procedural fee, including the E880 component.
