S795 – Exploration and/or removal, parathyroids or parathyroid tumour
OHIP Urology Code — ENDOCRINE SURGICAL PROCEDURES · Schedule of Benefits
This service covers the surgical exploration and/or removal of parathyroid glands or a parathyroid tumour. This is a surgical procedure listed in the Endocrine Surgical Procedures section of the Schedule of Benefits. The fee for the surgeon is a set amount. The fee for the assistant is based on 6 base units plus time units. The fee for the anaesthetist is based on 10 base units plus time units. This procedure may be performed in conjunction with add-on procedures like parathyroid re-implantation (E880) or transcervical thymectomy (E885).
When to Use
- Use S795 for the primary surgical exploration of the neck to identify and remove hyperfunctioning parathyroid glands or adenomas.
- Use S795 when performing a parathyroidectomy in conjunction with E885 (transcervical thymectomy) for patients requiring concurrent removal of thymic tissue.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing S795 as a bilateral procedure; the Schedule of Benefits fee is set, and additional exploration or removal of multiple glands is generally considered part of the primary procedure.
- Failing to include the required add-on codes (E880 or E885) on the same claim submission when these specific secondary procedures are performed, leading to missed revenue.
- Incorrectly applying trauma premiums (E420) to S795, as parathyroid exploration is rarely classified as a trauma-related emergency procedure.
Billing Tips
- Always verify the patient's age at the time of the procedure to ensure the appropriate age-based premium (10% to 30%) is applied to the S795 fee.
- If performing parathyroid re-implantation, ensure E880 is billed on the same claim as S795 to trigger the additional flat fee payment.
