E885 – Transcervical thymectomy performed in association with parathyroidectomy
OHIP Surgical Assists Code — ENDOCRINE SURGICAL PROCEDURES · Schedule of Benefits
Transcervical thymectomy performed in association with parathyroidectomy. This is an add-on service and must be claimed in addition to the primary parathyroidectomy procedure.
When to Use
- Use E885 when a transcervical thymectomy is performed during the same operative session as a primary parathyroidectomy (e.g., S795, S796, S797).
- Use this code specifically for the removal of thymic tissue via a transcervical approach when it is incidental or secondary to the primary parathyroid exploration.
Common Pitfalls
- Claiming E885 as a standalone procedure; it is strictly an add-on code and will be rejected if not submitted with a primary parathyroidectomy code.
- Attempting to bill E885 when the thymectomy is performed via a different approach (e.g., sternotomy), as this code is specific to the transcervical route.
Billing Tips
- Ensure the primary parathyroidectomy code is listed first on the claim to prevent automatic rejection of the add-on E885.
- Apply age-based premiums or after-hours premiums (E409, E410) to the total procedural fee, including E885, if the clinical criteria for those premiums are met.
