S798 – Adrenalectomy - unilateral
OHIP Urology Code — ENDOCRINE SURGICAL PROCEDURES · Schedule of Benefits
Unilateral adrenalectomy or exploration involves the surgical exploration or removal of one adrenal gland. A 25% premium (E793) may be added if the procedure is performed laparoscopically or with laparoscopic assistance. This procedure is eligible for various add-on premiums for after-hours work, trauma cases, and patient age. The fees for surgical assistance (suffix B) and anaesthesia (suffix C) are calculated based on basic units plus time units.
When to Use
- Use S798 for a planned unilateral adrenalectomy for conditions such as pheochromocytoma or adrenal adenoma when the procedure is performed as an open surgery.
- Use S798 in combination with E793 when the unilateral adrenalectomy is performed via a laparoscopic approach to capture the 25% premium.
Common Pitfalls
- Claiming S798 when the adrenal gland is removed incidentally during a nephrectomy is a billing error, as the adrenalectomy is considered part of the nephrectomy procedure.
- Attempting to bill for a second surgical assistant without prior authorization from a medical consultant will result in an automatic rejection, as S798 is not on the pre-approved list for second assistants.
Billing Tips
- Always append the E793 premium code to your S798 claim when using laparoscopic techniques to ensure you receive the 25% fee increase.
