S800 – Unilateral adrenalectomy for pheochromocytoma
OHIP Urology Code — ENDOCRINE SURGICAL PROCEDURES · Schedule of Benefits
S800 represents the unilateral surgical excision of an adrenal gland for the treatment of pheochromocytoma. The listed fee is for an open surgical approach. For a laparoscopic or laparoscopic-assisted procedure, E793 should be claimed in addition, which adds a 25% premium to the surgical fee. This service is not eligible for payment when the adrenalectomy is performed incidentally during a nephrectomy. The service includes anaesthesia (13 base units) and assistant (10 base units) components.
When to Use
- Use S800 for the primary surgical excision of an adrenal gland specifically indicated for the management of a pheochromocytoma.
- Use S800 as the base code when performing a unilateral adrenalectomy via an open surgical approach.
Common Pitfalls
- Do not claim S800 if the adrenalectomy is performed incidentally during a nephrectomy, as this is considered inclusive of the nephrectomy procedure.
- Failure to append E793 when the procedure is performed laparoscopically results in a 25% underpayment of the surgical fee.
- Attempting to claim S800 for adrenalectomy related to other pathologies (e.g., adrenal cortical carcinoma or adenoma) is incorrect; verify the diagnosis code matches the pheochromocytoma indication.
Billing Tips
- Always verify if the patient qualifies for age-based premiums, as S800 has specific percentage increases for patients under 16 years of age.
- Ensure E793 is submitted on the same claim as S800 to correctly trigger the 25% laparoscopic premium.

When an adrenalectomy is performed in conjunction with a nephrectomy, and is incidental to the removal of the kidney, there should be no additional claim for the adrenalectomy.
