E911
E911 – Implantation of neuroma into bone or muscle
OHIP Surgical Assists Code — NEUROLOGICAL SURGICAL PROCEDURES · Schedule of Benefits
When to Use
- Use E911 when you perform a formal implantation of a nerve stump into a muscle belly or bone tunnel to prevent symptomatic recurrence following the excision of a major nerve neuroma (N286).
- Apply this premium when managing a Morton's neuroma (N295) if the surgical plan specifically includes burying the proximal nerve end into the interosseous space or muscle to mitigate post-operative pain.
Common Pitfalls
- Do not bill E911 for standard nerve excision procedures (N286 or N295) where the nerve is simply transected and allowed to retract naturally without formal implantation.
- Avoid billing E911 if the procedure is performed as part of a revision surgery that does not involve the specific technique of burying the nerve into a bone or muscle bed.
Billing Tips
- Ensure your operative report explicitly describes the technique of burying or anchoring the nerve stump into the muscle or bone, as this documentation is required to justify the 40% premium over N286 or N295.
