E983 – Glaucoma filtering procedure - following previous glaucoma filtering procedure
OHIP Surgical Assists Code — OCULAR AND AURAL SURGICAL PROCEDURES · Schedule of Benefits
This is a percentage-based premium of 25% that is added to the fee for E132 (Glaucoma filtering procedures). This premium is applicable when the current glaucoma filtering procedure is performed following a previous glaucoma filtering procedure on the same eye.
When to Use
- Use E983 when performing a repeat trabeculectomy (E132) on an eye that has previously undergone a glaucoma filtering procedure.
- Apply this code when performing a revision or secondary filtering procedure on an eye where the initial E132 procedure failed to maintain adequate intraocular pressure control.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing E983 without a corresponding E132 claim, as E983 is a percentage-based premium that requires the base procedure to be present on the same claim.
- Applying E983 to procedures that are not classified under E132, such as valve implants or other non-filtering glaucoma surgeries.
- Failing to document the history of the previous filtering procedure in the patient record, which is essential for audit justification of the 25% premium.
Billing Tips
- Ensure E983 is submitted on the same claim as E132 to trigger the 25% increase on the base fee automatically.
- If the procedure is performed on both eyes, ensure the previous surgery history is clearly documented for each eye individually to support the premium for each side.
