F071 – Closed reduction of os calcis fracture or Hawkins type 2 talar neck fracture
OHIP Anaesthesia Code — MUSCULOSKELETAL SYSTEM SURGICAL PROCEDURES · Schedule of Benefits
This service provides for the closed reduction of a fracture of the os calcis (heel bone). Closed reduction involves the manipulation of the bone to restore its proper alignment without making a surgical incision. This procedure is eligible for anaesthesia with 7 base units. An add-on fee (E584) is payable for the application of a plaster cast when performed outside of a hospital setting.
When to Use
- Use F071 for the closed reduction of a calcaneal (os calcis) fracture where no surgical incision is made to achieve alignment.
- Use F071 for the closed reduction of a Hawkins type 2 talar neck fracture.
Common Pitfalls
- Do not bill F071 if an open reduction (ORIF) is performed, as this would require a different surgical code.
- Attempting to bill an assistant at surgery code with F071 will result in rejection, as no assistant base units are assigned to this procedure.
- Claiming E584 for cast application is strictly prohibited if the F071 procedure was performed in a hospital setting.
Billing Tips
- If an assistant is medically necessary, you must submit a request for M400B along with a letter of justification to a medical consultant for authorization.
- Ensure the plaster cast add-on E584 is only appended when the reduction is performed in an office or home setting.
